Shielded cables

Shielded cables are electrical cables of one or more insulated conductors enclosed by a conductive layer. Indeed, they have protection that reduces the quantities of electromagnetic radiations and or noises and diaphonies.

What is the function of the shielded cables?

The shield of a cable reduces the classic radio disturbances. It is useful also to delete possible interferences inside or outside it.

Therefore, they are the preferred choice where possible interferences could be a potential problem: communication, instrumentation, and control.

Common types of shielding:

  1. Shielded cables with aluminium tape shielding: it covers the conductors with a thin aluminium foil overlapped to one in polyester. This last one acts as a support and makes the screen more resistant. There’s the drain wire for connections on the ground. This shield has a coverage of 100%, with a high value for money. They are not suitable for heavy and flexible applications.  The perfect application for those types mentioned above instead is in conditions where interferences are generated from waves radiotelephony and in environments with lower electromagnetic interferences and in case of electrostatic charges.

  1. Shielded cables with copper braid. This screen features chainmail made of copper wires interwoven among them. Besides tape one, this shield has a coverage that does not go higher than 90%. However, it offers excellent mechanical resistance and a low electrical heater. The cables coated by this type of shield are usually applied to the inverters, control and command cables.

  1. Mixed shield. We obtain a great shield combining the first and the second type mentioned above. This screen has a coverage of 100% and a low electrical resistance. Most commonly used in environments with multiple interferences.
